Analysis of trace metals in comparison of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy with LA-ICP-MS

چکیده
Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and LA-ICP-MS (laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass-spectrometry) were used for the detection of trace metals in a solid matrix consisting of KBr and two oxides. The results of both methods were compared to investigate the strengths and weaknesses of both methods. Most difficulties for quantification of LIBS data are related to matrix effects and self-absorption. The influence of the sample preparation on detection and quantification for LIBS data is not significant, with typical deviations in the range of -10%. In the case of LA-ICP-MS the detection limits are in principle lower and the quantification is also more precise, but the preparation method strongly influences these data. The oxidation state of the elements as well as the absorption coefficient of the trace metals influence the detection limits of LIBS. The plasma temperatures and the electron densities were determined from the emission spectra, and are typically in the range of 6000–10 000 K and between 6.2=10 –6.8=10 cm . 17 17 y3 2003 Elsevier B.V. Basic rocks appear as cumulative hornblende gabbros in the Namen pluton, West of Sabzevar. One outcrop of these rocks contains magnetite ore patches. Although magnetite- bearing hornblende gabbro (MHG) and other hornblende gabbros (HG) have similar mineralogy, their trace element compositions are completely different. Trace element analysis of magnetite minerals by laser ablation inductively co...
متن کاملThe effect of self-absorption correction using internal reference on determining heavy metals concentration by laser induced breakdown spectroscopy
The identification and concentration of heavy metals, which may be so harmful for the body, is determined by the method of calibration-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy using a special strategy. First, the plasma temperature is obtained using the Boltzmann plot. Then, a line with an inappreciable self-absorption is considered for each element as the reference. The modified intensities o...

The source of signal variations that governs the analytical performance of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) was investigated in this study. In order to specify the source of signal variations of LA-ICP-MS, laser-induced plasma (LIP) Fe emission, LA-ICP-MS Fe+ and LA-ICP-MS Ni+ signals were used as internal standards for the determination of trace elements ...

Nickel alloys are used extensively across a wide range of industries, often in components which are required to perform critical functions under arduous operating conditions. As a result, the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of such alloys must be well understood and the levels of trace metal contaminants, which may have a profound effect on these properties, must be strictly contr...

Laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is one of the most commonly applied methods for lateral trace element distribution analysis in medical studies. Many improvements of the technique regarding quantification and achievable lateral resolution have been achieved in the last years. Nevertheless, sample preparation is also of major importance and the optimal samp...
